Poly methyl methacrylate

Physical properties

The density of PMMA is lower than that of glass: the density of PMMA is about 1.15-1.19g/cm3, which is half of that of glass and 43% of that of metallic aluminum.

The mechanical strength of PMMA is relatively high: the relative molecular mass of PMMA is about 2 million, which is a long-chain polymer, and the chain forming molecules is very soft. Therefore, the strength of PMMA is relatively high, the tensile and impact resistance is 7~18 times higher than that of ordinary glass.

PMMA has a high light transmittance. PMMA is the best polymer transparent material at present, with a light transmittance of 92%, which is higher than that of glass.

Raw material characteristics

Colorless and transparent, light transmittance up to 90%-92%, strong toughness, more than 10 times larger than silicon glass.

Good optics, insulation, processability and weather resistance

The melting point of PMMA is relatively low: the melting point of PMMA is about 130-140°C(265-285 °F), which is much lower than the high temperature of about 1000 degrees of glass.

Usage

PMMA has the advantages of light weight, low price and easy forming. Soluble in organic solvents such as benzyl ether, it can form good thin films and good dielectric properties, and can be used as dielectric layer of organic field effect transistor.

Its molding methods include casting, injection molding, mechanical processing,  etc. Especially injection molding, it can be produced in large quantities with simple manufacturing process and low cost. Therefore, its application is increasingly extensive. It is widely used in instrument parts, car lights, optical lenses and transparent pipelines.
